Skin Peels

Dramatically transforming problem skin

Overview

If you want younger healthier-looking skin, the use of skin peels will dramatically improve both the appearance and health of your complexion. Whether you want to treat a specific area or all over your face, arms, hands and neck, skin peels can be used to:

  • Decrease lines and wrinkles
  • Increase skin tone and smoothness
  • Remove sun or age spots and uneven pigmentation
  • Decrease pore size and regulate oily skin
  • Reduce acne and acne scars.

Skin peels are an accelerated form of exfoliation induced by chemical products. This highly effective method of skin rejuvenation works by removing the top layers of old, dead skin to reveal the fresh, younger, healthy cells underneath.

There are many different types of skin peels available. They vary in strength from superficial ones that will allow you to return to normal daily activities immediately to deeper skin peels which require a few days off work. Here at Hampstead Skin we offer two leading products: Jan Marini and Obagi®. The choice will be made after a full skin consultation and will be tailored both to your individual needs and skin condition.

Jan Marini glycolic skin peels are available in 40% and 70% strengths, and are given as a course of peels with increasing strengths. They are not painful and there is no down time, but skin does need to be prepared for two weeks with glycolic home care products beforehand.

The Obagi Blue Peel® uses Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) as the active ingredient mixed with Obagi's patented Blue Base. This is a stronger one-off peel with a down time of five to seven days. Skin needs to be prepared for at least six weeks prior to treatment.

Procedure

Skin peels are performed in the clinic. First your skin will be thoroughly cleansed, and then the practitioner will carefully apply the chemical solution and perform the peel. The whole procedure typically takes 30-45 minutes. Before you go home you will be given post-procedure instructions.

After a glycolic peel you may experience mild redness and occasional swelling, but very little visible peeling or flaking.

After a stronger TCA peel your skin may be a little red and slightly swollen during the first 24 hours. It will be dry and feel tight but should not be painful. The skin will peel between three to five days later, and must be left to come off at its own pace. Make-up may be applied over the new, pink skin as soon as it has healed.

FAQs

  • Can anyone have skin peels?

Skin peels are not suitable if you have a suntan or if you are going to continue having excessive sun exposure.

  • What do I need to do before a peel?

Our specialist skin practitioner will advise you on your home care programme. Depending on peel type, this is usually performed two to six weeks beforehand in order to correctly prepare your skin.

  • How many skin peels will I need?

This is determined by your skin condition, skin thickness and problem area. Usually a series of three to six lighter peels and only one of the stronger peels is needed.

  • What will my skin be like afterwards?

With superficial peels you will have a mild facial redness, minimal swelling and very little visible peeling or flaking. Make-up can be worn straight away and you can return to normal activity. After a deeper peel you will have a more intense redness, flaking and peeling which will last three to five days depending on the strength and depth of the peel.

  • Can I wash after a skin peel?

For the first few days only water not soap should be applied to the treated area.

  • Are there any complications?

Scarring could occur if the skin is picked at or pulled off before it is ready to come off, both of which can be avoided. If you are prone to cold sores they can be activated by skin peels but can be prevented by the use of anti-viral medication. Increased pigmentation may occur on rare occasions if the skin is not properly prepared with the home care programme, although this resolves over time and can be largely prevented by rigorous use of sunscreen for the first three months.

  • Is there anything I need to do or avoid afterwards?

Exposure to intense sunlight must be avoided within the first one or two weeks and high factor sunscreen needs to be applied regularly.

  • Will I need follow-up peels?

Skin peels can be repeated after three months, but this is not usually necessary unless it is part of a course. They can be repeated at any time in the future and will not harm the skin.

  • How can I help look after my skin following a peel?

Regular use of sunscreen is mandatory for at least three months to prevent further sun damage. In addition, the use of vitamin creams, AHA creams or enzyme creams can continue to improve the skin texture and reverse some of the effects caused by sun exposure.

  • Are skin peels a substitute for a facelift?

No, because they do not tighten sagging skin or natural loss of facial tissue or volume.
