Pigmentation
Effective skin products for the treatment of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin
Overview
Pigmentation problems include facial age spots, liver spots, freckles and brown marks. One of the most effective treatments to remove or significantly lessen sun/age spots or hyperpigmentation is a chemical skin peel.
This accelerated form of exfoliation induced by chemical products has been proven to be a highly effective method of rejuvenating the skin. It works by removing the outer layers of old skin to reveal the new, younger cells underneath. There are various types of peels available to treat pigmentation, age spots or sun damage but the product we use at Hampstead Skin is the Obagi Blue Peel®. The strength of the peel will depend on factors such as your skin type, age and skin thickness, as well as the desired results.
The Obagi Blue Peel System uses a low concentration of Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) mixed with the patented Blue Base from Obagi. It effectively removes the surface layers of aged and damaged skin, or skin with pigmentation. By replacing dead skin cells with healthier ones, your skin will become clearer, firmer, smoother and more youthful-looking.

Procedure
It is essential to prepare your skin first by using the Obagi Nu Derm® System, which has been developed to work safely and effectively in conjunction with the Obagi Blue Peel System.
The Obagi Blue Peel procedure takes less than an hour to perform and does not normally require sedation. Your practitioner will apply the Blue Peel to the area to be treated, which is typically the face and neck. You will then experience a mild burning sensation for a few minutes, followed by a bluish tint to your skin that usually washes off in 12-24 hours.
Depending on the strength and depth of the peel, it is normal to have some light swelling. Within two to three days, your skin will begin to peel and must be allowed to come off at its own pace over the next few days. Your skin should be healed within a week.
Once your skin has finished peeling and is completely recovered, you will notice a visible improvement in your complexion and reduction in your pigmentation. Your skin's appearance should continue to improve for the next four to six weeks.

FAQs
-
Can anyone have skin peels?
Skin peels are not suitable if you have a suntan or if you are going to continue having excessive sun exposure.
-
Do I need to prepare my skin first?
Skin needs to be prepared at home for at least six weeks prior to treatment.
-
How many skin peels will I need to treat my pigmentation?
This is determined by your skin condition, skin thickness and problem area but usually only one TCA peel is needed.
-
What is the down time?
This is a strong one-off peel with a down time of five to seven days.
-
What will my skin be like afterwards?
After a TCA peel you will experience intense redness, flaking and peeling which will last five to ten days depending on the strength and depth of the peel.
-
Can I wash after a skin peel?
For the first few days you should only use water not soap on the treated area.
-
What should I do to avoid the skin cracking?
Applying Vaseline several times a day can help prevent cracking.
-
Are there are likely complications?
People with a skin type prone to pigmentation may experience pigment changes following a peel, although this can be largely prevented by rigorous use of sunscreen for the first three months. If you tend to develop brown discolouration after injury, such as a mild burn, it is advisable to have a test area peeled first before undergoing a full face chemical peel.
-
Is there anything I need to do or avoid afterwards?
You must avoid sunlight for the first one to two weeks after a peel.
-
How can I help look after my skin following a peel?
Regular use of sunscreen is mandatory for at least three months to prevent further sun damage or increase in pigmentation. The use of vitamin creams, AHA creams or enzyme creams can also continue to improve the skin texture and reverse some of the effects of long-term sun exposure.
